Highwic : Beauty in Every Corner
Nestled away from the hustle and bustle of modern day-to-day life, Auckland is home to one of New Zealand's fine Gothic houses, the Highwic.
Highwic, was constructed in 1862, by landed gentry by the name of Alfred and Eliza Buckland and had been the home of their 21 children, and was passed on to his ancestors until 1978, when the beautiful historical treasure was finally sold.
The architecture of Highwic, resounds the designs and patterns of those made famous by A.J. Downings, an American architect who published a book by the name of 'The Architecture of Country Houses'.
The house, which is furnished with beautiful antiques and trinkets from bygone era, many of the possession offers glimpses into the Buckland Family's past and status in society. Collections of their belongings are offered for viewing which include the likes of Alfred Buckland's wallet, matchbox and card case, along with a housekeeping belt, which is said to have been worn by Matilda, Alfred Buckland's second wife.
Apart from the possessions of the Buckland family, this quaint and cosy house is the centre stage for many of Auckland's elite events and festivals. Partaking in the Auckland Fringe Festival, Highwic is the location of the performance of "Loft Shades" that is hosted by the Paper Dog Society. Other events which are hosted at the house or within the breathtaking gardens at Highwic include Windy City Strugglers which presents an eclectic mix of soothing blues, souls and folk music, as well as the Tea Dance in the Highwic Marquee which is part of the Auckland City Music in the Parks programme.
