Mount Eden, known as Maungawhau in Maori refers to a dormant volcano and its neighboring suburb in Auckland. Reaching a height of 196m above sea level the volcanic summit is the highest geographical point in Auckland and affords a panoramic view of the city. Its advantageous elevation and location 5 km south of the city centre made Mt. Eden an important point since pre-European times. Several Maori tribes fortified the hill as a strategic stronghold. Although its occupation drew to a close around 1700 due to tribal warfare, the earthen fortifications have left an indelible mark on the structure of the mountain. Since the 1950's Mt. Eden has been used a centre for radio communication while some of its craters have served as water reservoirs as early as 1877. Today, the 50 m deep volcanic crater holds a magnetic attraction for both local and foreign visitors, reflecting the changing but important role that Mt. Eden has played in New Zealand life over the centuries.

Initially, the fertile area surrounding the mountain was utilized by the European colonists for agrarian purposes. Gradually, Mt. Eden grew into a fashionable residential area for professionals and businessmen. In 1879, the rapid development of the suburb caused the government to declare the magnificent mountain a public reserve in order to preserve it for posterity. During the 1950's and the 1960's the suburb took up a bohemian image, drawing many artists, writers and educationists who were attracted by the area's drop in real estate value and its striking environs. It continues to be a hub of creative activity giving rise to its reputation as Auckland's 'Home of Arts'.

The exciting possibilities of the city can be best explored by finding centrally located Auckland hotel accommodation. Advantageously situated on the waterfront Copthorne Hotel Auckland Harbour City provides instant access to the throbbing commercial district as well as the enjoyment of New Zealand's mesmerizing scenery rendering a visit to Auckland a truly memorable experience.
